About Bashful Frog

The Bashful Frog is what happens when Jellycat's most familiar silhouette — the long-limbed, floppy-eared Bashful shape that made the range famous — is handed to an amphibian. The result is a moss-green, fluffy-coated frog with outsized eyes and arms long enough to drape over a cot rail, and it sits in the Bashful range as one of its more unusual subjects, alongside the freshwater company of Jellycat's many other frogs.

There is more than one Bashful Frog. Our records hold a lighter-green small-only version from 2011 and a separate moss-green edition made in two sizes, and sellers routinely distinguish a "small eye version" from the rest — a shorthand worth knowing before you buy, because listings for the two are easily confused. We know 2011 as a year and not a day, so that release is shown as a range.

None of these appear in Jellycat's current index and none have for nine consecutive checks, which is consistent with retirement across the board. Resale listings are frequent and priced ambitiously, but those are asking prices — what people want, not what anyone paid.

What we still don't know
  • Exact release year of the moss-green two-size edition — no archive coverage and no primary source found.
  • Retirement dates for any of the four SKUs. A fan-maintained Tumblr post cites 2010/2011/2015 retirements for different Bashful Frogs, but it is a single uncorroborated secondary source and we have not used it.
  • Whether the "small eye" and "big eye" frogs are separate production runs with separate SKUs, or the same SKU changed mid-life.
  • Whether BAS3FG is a genuine fourth product or a duplicate record of BAS3FGN.
  • Original manufacturer RRP for any size — no primary Jellycat pricing found.
