About Dexter Dragon

Dexter is Jellycat's soft-touch answer to the fire-breathing dragon. Their own product copy put it best: "Most dragons are fiery, but Dexter Dragon is flopsy! No scales for this scamp - just snugglesoft fur in chalky blue and warm maroon red." That's the whole character — soft horns, stitched wings, knobbly spines down the back and a pointy tail tip, all rendered in fur rather than anything armoured. The wings are stitched flat and fabric-soft rather than wired, which is part of why Dexter tends to get recommended as a dragon a small child can actually sleep against.

He came in three sizes, which Jellycat named Little, Medium and Huge — the largest is a genuinely big floor-sized creature at roughly 66cm long. Dexter sits in Jellycat's Monsters and Mythical Creatures corner, among a crowded dragon shelf that includes Onyx, Lazulia, Moonlight and Starry-Eyed; the blue-and-maroon palette is what separates him from that pack, and it's what resellers lead with.

He is gone now. Jellycat's own site showed him in stock as late as June 2024, then out of stock through 2025, and he no longer appears in their index at all. Every stockist we track is sold out. Second-hand listings are plentiful, but those are asking prices, not sales.

What we still don't know
  • Actual release date. No primary Jellycat source gives one. The earliest independent evidence of the design existing is a stockist page from February 2019, which is when a shop listed it, not when Jellycat launched it. We know it predates mid-2020 and probably early 2019; we cannot give a year with confidence.
  • Exact retirement date. We have Jellycat showing it in stock on 24 June 2024 and out of stock or absent ever since. Whether the sizes retired together or separately is unknown.
  • Whether the three sizes were discontinued at the same time. Our data has the Little and Medium last seen on Jellycat's own site at different points, and the Huge has no Jellycat snapshot at all.
  • Genuine resale value. We have only asking prices from live listings, never completed sales, so we cannot say what one sells for.
  • Whether the maroon trim varied between size runs — no source addresses this.
