About Funky Dragon

Funky Dragon belongs to the loud, graphic end of Jellycat's early menagerie - a Monsters and Mythical Creatures character built out of flat blocks of colour rather than the soft naturalism the brand is better known for now. Two colourways are recorded: a blue dragon with an olive green and white striped body and bright pink legs, and an olive green one with a pale blue and white striped body and yellow legs. Both share cartoon eyes, cord antennae and small pointy orange teeth. It is a design that looks hand-drawn.

Our catalogue dates it to 1999, and a seller describes it the same way, but nothing primary supports that year, so treat it as one credible reading rather than a settled fact. What is clear is that it is no longer made — collectors and sellers consistently talk about it as retired.

There is very little else on the record. No Jellycat archive snapshot covers it, no stockist listing survives, and the few figures we hold are asking prices rather than sales. A quiet, genuinely old design that the internet has largely stopped documenting.

What we still don't know
  • Exact release year — 1999 is credible but unsourced; no primary Jellycat record found
  • Retirement date — unknown; only that sellers now describe it as retired
  • SKU — none recorded for any of the four rows
  • Whether more than two colourways existed
  • Any original Jellycat marketing copy; archive.org has no coverage of this design
