About Toothy Mutt

Toothy Mutt is the dog of Jellycat's Toothies range — an orange, slightly scruffy mongrel with a black nose and, unmistakably, a broad row of chunky white teeth grinning out from under it. The Toothies were a small family of characters built around that one joke: a mutt, a T. rex, a donkey, a dragon and a handful of others, each with the same daft, delighted smile. It is a design that reads as cheerful rather than cute, which is much of why people still hunt for it.

The range is generally dated to 2016, and we hold that as a year rather than a date — we know the year but not the day, so release is shown as a range. Jellycat's own archive doesn't cover this design, so we can't quote them directly on it. What we can say is that Toothy Mutt no longer appears in Jellycat's index and hasn't across nine consecutive checks, which matches the near-universal 'retired' label on resale listings.

Second-hand copies turn up regularly, so it isn't genuinely scarce — but sellers reliably describe it as rare, and the smallest size is the one people chase.

What we still don't know
  • Exact release date within 2016 — no primary Jellycat source; the 2016 year itself traces to Jelly Journal's copy, which our orig_desc appears to have been taken from, so it is arguably one source rather than two.
  • Retirement date — no retired_by, and no archive.org coverage of Jellycat's own page for this design.
  • The SKU and exact dimensions of the small (22cm) size.
  • Whether the Toothies range had exactly 9 members; only one source states the count.
  • Actual sold prices — every observed figure is a live asking price, including the $169 two-item bundle.
