About Wilbur Whale

Wilbur is Jellycat's plain-spoken blue whale: a rounded, beany body in soft baby blue with a cream corduroy underside, black button eyes and a stitched line of a mouth. That corduroy belly is the whole trick — it gives a shape that could easily read as generic a bit of texture and weight, and it's the detail owners mention first. He came in three sizes, from a pocketable tiny up to a long large, and he sits in the Sea Creatures shelf alongside Jellycat's other whales.

Wilbur is retired. He no longer appears in Jellycat's own index — five consecutive checks, all absent — and sellers describe him that way too. On the release year our record says 2016 for the large and 2017 for the smaller sizes, but we have no archived Jellycat page to confirm either, so we show year-only ranges rather than a date.

One caution if you go shopping: Jellycat has made several similarly named whales, and listings routinely mix up Wilbur with Wiley, Wally and others. Check the corduroy belly.

What we still don't know
  • The exact release day for any size — no archive.org snapshot of Jellycat's own page exists for this design, so we have year-only bounds.
  • The exact retirement date. We know it was still sold at some point and is now absent from Jellycat's index, but not when it was withdrawn.
  • Whether the Amazon-listed 'Wowser Wilbur Whale' (17 inches) is an earlier name for this design, a distinct product, or a seller's mislabelling. Single source, unresolved.
  • Which of our three rows corresponds to which of the tiny/small/large size tiers — the human adjudication concluded nobody can currently tell.
